Finally it is out. The market research firm Gartner has in its CIO Survey found in 2009, topics for IT decision makers in 2009 related to the very top. First is the improvement of business processes, to follow the courses cost reduction, improvement in labor productivity and the profits (and keep) new customers.
Wen surprised this?
The improvement of business processes is already since the first edition 2005 study in the first place. And priorities as no surprise really. Are the topics requested but so general that really has to agree any IT manager.
The problem lies as always in the details! What business processes are improved? Where can using information specific added value in their own companies generated? Studies such as the CIO Survey may be useful for reasoning in corporate executives. IT decision makers in medium-sized businesses need to be much more concrete, you want in the current economic environment to justify investments in IT.
How about a return on investment argument?
Specific talking points are qualitative and quantitative return on investment considerations, which depend on the specific company. The multiple data collection costs you 50 hours a month? Your employees spend 10 hours per week with them for information and could save 3.5 hours of it?
In such considerations, the key for the need for sustained investment in information technology, especially in an unpleasant economic environment with shrinking margins.
On the other side of the coin are the investment costs. This is often overlooked is that the solution not just in the purchase of new software must exist with complex processes and introduction of escalating costs. Modern IT platforms such as SharePoint, Intrexx, WordPress, etc. offer much comfort and allow for the expansion and existing environments in a short time.
